Medium:Escape Room Game
Dialectical Research is a hybrid screen based and physical room puzzle art game. I use my own dialect, the Barnsley dialect, to explore identity and alienation. The body-horror phenomena in my game emerges as a physical manifestation of a voiced mask. I am inspired by the existence of Personas proposed by Jung and Face Theory. Channeling my experience of masking my accent to be understood away from home, the action of decoding puzzles mimics attempts to comprehend language. Using in-room padlocks, paper clues and audio messages, the player investigates the screen based work to unlock the information about the alienated figures. My game relies heavily on player interaction, I focused on giving enough clues and balancing the open narrative elements to ensure players engage with the themes and characters. The interactions conclude in an artifact, a printed newspaper recording the players responses. .
